Therapeutic Approach & Treatment

As a licensed healthcare psychologist, I provide evidence-based, short-term, goal-oriented treatment within the BGGZ system for adults aged 18 and older.

Together, we explore the origin of your complaints to support effective recovery. The aim is not only symptom reduction, but also prevention of future problems.

After treatment, you will have practical tools to manage your challenges more effectively and improve your overall well-being.
You’ll usually feel more energetic, relaxed, and happier.

Treatment is available in English and Dutch at our location in Utrecht, (partially) online, and via E-Health modules. Feel free to inquire about the options.

Your treatment in 3 steps

The approach of Luc Psychologie can be broken down into three steps:

1. Intake
(1-2 sessions)

During the intake phase, we’ll work together to explore what’s going on and where your symptoms are coming from. This helps us better understand what’s needed to alleviate your symptoms and what goals you’d like to set. Based on this, we’ll determine how the treatment will be structured.

After 1 to 2 sessions, I will discuss the treatment plan with you. This plan outlines what the treatment will entail, the goals you have set, and the interventions that can help you address your symptoms.

2. Treatment
(10-20 sessions)

During the treatment phase, we will work toward your goals. I utilize various evidence-based interventions from the field of psychology. We’ll evaluate your progress regularly along the way and adjust the treatment as needed.
Most treatments consist of 10 to 20 sessions lasting 45–60 minutes.

By the end of treatment, you’ll have gained tools to help you better manage your symptoms, allowing you to feel better about yourself again.

3. Evaluation & Relapse Prevention

In the final phase of treatment, we evaluate what the treatment has achieved for you. In addition to reducing your symptoms, I also support you in preparing for future challenges. We aim for you to function better than you did before the symptoms began. To this end, we create a relapse prevention plan.

If the treatment has not yet yielded sufficient results, I will help you determine the best next steps and, if necessary, refer you to a specialized psychologist or institution.

Treatment Methods

At Luc Psychologie, I use techniques that have been scientifically proven to be effective. My practice is primarily based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Together, we identify which (troubling) thoughts contribute to your symptoms and which behaviors may be perpetuating them. We then work together to find solutions.

In addition to CBT, I also make use of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). This is an effective, modern form of behavioral therapy that teaches people to deal with painful thoughts and feelings in a gentler way (acceptance) rather than fighting them. This acceptance creates space to take actions that are meaningful (commitment), leading to a vibrant and flexible life.

I also regularly use EMDR, mindfulness, and running therapy, as well as interventions from positive psychology.

The effect of all these techniques is often to promote positive changes in your thinking and behavior. By addressing negative thoughts and behaviors, you can better cope with problems, increase your self-confidence, and experience a better quality of life.

Sports & Performance Psychology

Do you perform well in training but struggle to deliver in competition? Do you have trouble managing your nerves? Do you suffer from fear of failure, struggle to perform under pressure, or have difficulty staying motivated?
A sports psychologist can help with these issues.
In sports and performance psychology, I use a combination of techniques, including CBT and ACT.

These techniques can help you better achieve your optimal performance state, better regulate your anxiety, stay more focused, and motivate yourself when things aren’t going your way.

Please note that counseling from a sports and performance psychologist is not covered by your health insurance.
